RIFLE HUNTING
We are supporters of ethical hunting and as a result, no hunting takes place from any vehicle. All our hunts are conducted on foot (Spot and Stalk). Due to this and with our experienced PHs and trackers, who all of them have excellent hunting knowledge, you will receive the complete hunting experience.
Hunting Season
We conduct hunting safaris throughout the year, however we recommend months of March through to October. A typical hunting day at Burke Safaris will start at the crack of dawn after a small breakfast and coffee, or cereal (or whatever the client prefers). Then you and your professional hunter will be off to the hunting areas where you will spend the entire morning hunting depending on the hunting area and animal you’re after, you might spend the entire day out, in that case we will supply a lunch box and plenty of refreshments for the day.
Should you not stay out the whole day we normally have lunch at around 12 o’clock, with cold refreshments. We will start the afternoon hunt as soon as the client is ready to go. Most important, is that we cater towards each and every client’s needs. We will make recommendations however, the final decision rests with the client in which way he wants to hunt. Our preferred method is to use one of our well equipped hunting vehicles until we spot the trophy we are after, then make a stalk. It is important to note that all the species do not naturally occur in all the hunting areas and it is essential that we know what your priority animals are. The client must understand that there will be some traveling involved for some species.
RIFLE HUNTING REQUIRES A MINIMUM OF 5-7 DAYS!
Rifle Recommendations
The smallest bullet diameter allowed for plains game is .270. Commonly available and effective cartridges include .270 Winchester, 7mm-08 Remington, 7x57mm Mauser, .280 Remington, any of the 7mm magnum cartridges, .308 Winchester, .30-06 Springfield, any of the .300 magnum cartridges, .338-06, .338 Winchester Magnum, .35 Whelen, .375 H&H Magnum, and above. Essentially, any cartridge normally sufficient for elk hunting will be suitable for plains game. Most shooting will not exceed 100 yards. We would recommend that you use a minimum of a .30 calibre rifle on all plains game, with a 3 to 9 variable scope, and a minimum of an 180gr high quality soft nose cartridge.
For the dangerous game, a .375 or bigger with a compact scope and high quality swing-off mounts is recommended. For Cape buffalo – bring a good supply of high quality soft nose cartridges as well as some solids.
Most important – use a rifle that you feel comfortable with and has used successfully in the past. Most shooting will not exceed 100 yards. Essentially, any cartridge normally sufficient for elk hunting will be suitable for plains game.
Should you prefer, you are more than welcome to rent one of our rifles that way you do not go through the hassle of carrying a rifle on the plane.
